The New Zealand is a breed of rabbit, which despite the name, is American in origin. The breed originated in California, possibly from rabbits imported from New Zealand. New Zealand rabbits are available in five colors recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders' Association: white, red, black, blue, and broken. Here at By The Bay Farms we only breed white.

While our current Mother's/Doe's do have pedigrees, our Buck and Stud do not at this time.

Kits and rabbits are for pick up only from our farm in Island Pond, Vermont. We do not ship them. Please select "pick up" when checking out.

If you are interested, a 50% non refundable deposit is required to hold your rabbit. Exceptions to the refund policy are only made in the unlikely event that your rabbit on hold parishes. The rest of the funds will need to be paid upon pick up which must be within one week of paid deposit.

Once you have paid your deposit, please message us HERE  or call 508-685-0779 to set up a pick up day and time. We ask that people do not stop by to pick up without an appointment.

If you wish to pay cash or check for your deposit, the rabbits will be 10% less. This is due to card processing fees.

When kits or adults are available the website will reflect this.

FAQs:

 What do we feed?

We feed our rabbits a balanced diet that we mix up ourselves! This diet includes Rolled Oats, Golden Wheat Berries, Pearled Barley, Hard Red Wheat Berries, Split Peas and Black Sunflower Seeds. We also give them fresh veggies and Alfalfa Sprouts in moderation. We understand that buying pellet is much more convenient and totally fine! We just suggest going with a High Protein Pellet like Manna Pro.

What type of habitat do they have?

We prefer to not use the colony habitat with our rabbits so we can control their breeding and eating. We use large cages inside a shelter that has a roof, three sides and a burlap curtain we draw when the temperatures get down into the negatives. We also supply them with a nesting box (even the males) in the winter and when the Doe's are pregnant. We give them lots of straw for bedding. They do use water bottles but bowls are fine as well.

How big will they get?

New Zealands are medium to large rabbits. Bucks (males) weigh 9–11 lbs, while the does (females) weigh 10–12 lbs.

How are their temperaments?

New Zealand rabbits are known for being mild tempered and calm. While we do handle them, we don't do it a ton as most people who buy them purchase them for breeding or meat. You can expect ours to be fairly used to loud noises like kids, dogs, cats and machinery. These guys don't spook easily.
